Floyd Mayweather pleaded guilty to reduced domestic battery charges last year; an option that allowed him to avoid a trial on felony charges for an attack on his former girlfriend while 2 of their children witnessed.
The fighter was able to avoid up to 34 years in prison because of the plea deal, so he was sentenced to 3 months on December 22. (He was allowed to fight Cinco de Mayo weekend, but then had to turn himself in.)
Only 10 days after Mayweather turned himself in & began his 3 months, a motion was filed to have him be put under house arrest or move him into the general jail population. Floyd claims that the nutrition he is receiving is of low quality…duh Floyd, it’s jail.
The 35-year-old fighter even brought in his personal physician to help his “case”. Dr. Robert Voy stated in his affidavit that he is “concerned about Floyd withdrawing, developing anger he cannot dissipate through the usual means of dedicated exercise & training…Boxing has been Mr. Mayweather’s life since he was a young man & [the fans] need champions of this type to continue to their natural retirement & hopefully their contributions to society thereafter.” Wait a minute Dr. Voy, isn’t Floyd in jail because he did not “dissipate” his anger “through the usual means of dedicated exercise & training”? Or is it standard ‘Mayweather’ training to use his girlfriend as a punching bag? I would even like to add, that Floyd’s societal contributions are bound to be of higher caliber after he has served his full sentence & has hopefully been humbled by the experience.
Now, let’s question why Mayweather would request to be included in the general jail population? Jail officials are trying to be sensitive to the celebrity status of the fighter & protect him by having him in solitary confinement. I don’t have the anger issues that Floyd does, but I would think this would be a good thing (if I were him); he isn’t interacting with other potentially angry men & creating opportunities to extend his sentence by dissipating his anger through fighting with them. All of this said, I think Prosecutor Lisa Luzaich said it best, “It’s jail. Where did he think he was going? The Four Seasons?” Suck it up Mayweather, it’s only 3 three months.
