Great Weekend in Japan!
The UFC 144 card was one night of great fights! From an upset with the lightweight title belt to the “all or nothing” mentality seen in the ring- it was an amazing return to the Land of the Rising Sun!
The title bout was fast paced & had to of been a nightmare to score, but Henderson took the belt. In a post fight interview posted on UFC.com, Benson Henderson says that he noticed Edgar flinch at his jab & took advantage of it. Henderson stalked after the champion during the second round & Edgar gave his challenger a hard kick early in the round to try to stop him. Both fighters were bloody & Edgar’s face showcased many of the hits that his opponent landed throughout the 5 round bout. Both fighters thought they had won the fight & Frankie was surprised when Benson’s arm was raised. The 5 round, fast paced, non stop, title baring match took “Fight of the Night” honors while also naming a new lightweight champion! Other honors for the night included “Knockout of the Night” to Anthony Pettis & “Submission of the Night” to Vaughn Lee. Just 81 seconds into Pettis’s fight, he stopped Lauzon in his tracks. Lee had an early knockdown from “Kid” Yamamoto but was able to recover quickly & catch his opponent in an armbar to get the tap-out. The night, as a whole, was a success for UFC in Japan. The crowd in Saitama was supportive & as into the event as the UFC fans broadcasting here in the States. Thanks to all the competitors for the entertaining night of fights & congrats to the winners! Can’t wait for this weekend’s event in Sydney!
