There is no love lost between these two, and whether it was all mind games or it doesn’t matter because Anderson Silva still came out on top.
Chael Sonnen was his usual self leading up to this fight; loud, cocky and he did his best to insult Anderson Silva, his family, and his country. Insiders were starting to wonder if it was working because Anderson responded and showed his emotion and he never does that.
This animosity between the two fighters continued into the octagon as Chael Sonnen disrupted Silva’s entrance when he stood outside the octagon and waived Silva in. Silva walking to the ring with his Nike fight gear and burger king sponsorship was not phased.
As you would assume both fighters did not touch gloves and Sonnen immediately went after Silva with a double-leg take down. Sonnen is a championship wrestler and he was handling Silva pretty well, but because of Anderson’s Brazilian jiu jitsu skills Sonnen was not able to make the pass beyond Silva’s butterfly defense.
Round two began and Chael went for the takedown again, but this time Silva defended it and the fighters remained on their feet. Sonnen goes for a spinning back fist but Silva ducks and makes Sonnen miss as he tumbles to the ground. Silva follows this up with what many thought was an illegal knee, but the replay showed that it was a knee to the body. This knee had to rock Sonnen because he was not able to mount a defense. He momentarily got to his feet, but that didn’t last long as Silva took him down again and continued to rain down strikes. Sonnen didn’t protect himself so Lavigne had to step in and stop the fight. After the fight both fighters recognized the battle they had just been through and no more words were exchanged, just Silva inviting Sonnen over for a BBQ, which is not likely to happen ever.
There were quite a few first round stoppages in UFC 148, but the co-main events were worth the price of admission. I will be posting a blog about the Tito vs. Griffin fight in the next couple days so come back and read what I have to say.
